Quit Complaining About Being “Broke”!

Adam DesAutels on 05 23, 2009

Lazy & BrokeAre you making more or less money than you have before this economical downturn? If you are making less, what are you doing about it? If you are doing nothing and just sitting on your couch complaining, you are the cause of your situation and you have no right to pass the buck or blame your current state on the economy.

I have had a number of conversations with many close friends and very intelligent business people (worldwide). Many of us have hit rock bottom more than once, so this current economic situation is not a new beast to concur. In fact, the majority of us are making more money in this “down economy” than we ever have. I am not going to share their stories without their permission, but I will give you some insight on mine. I have been BROKE. So when I share information on this topic with you, I speak from the heart. An empathetic view, if you will. Many people say they are broke. For some, “Broke” simply means one less vacation every year. Or not being able to remodel or sell their house. I have NO pity for those people! Broke is having to get up three hours early for work to heat up water on your stove in order to take a bath in your house because you can’t pay the gas bill. Broke is waking up every morning afraid someone will tell you that you need to leave your house because you haven’t been able to pay your mortgage in over 8 months. Broke is having to muscle up the courage to look your spouse in the eyes and tell him or her that you might lose everything and you have no idea what to do. Broke is not the lack of “Luxury” money used to buy unnecessary self-gratifying items. Don’t get me wrong, there are many people who are BROKE. However, the term is thrown around too loosely these days! By the way, my wife and I have been through all of those situations above and have gotten ourselves out of them. What is involved with getting out of these types of situations?

  1. Confront Your Problems – Don’t bury your head in the sand thinking that when you pull it out everything will be okay! Be prepared to make some extremely tough decisions and make them fast. Don’t be afraid to let go of material items. Your longevity of your family depends on this. Short-term setbacks can result in long-term freedom.
  2. Get Better – A wise mentor once told me “If you want more, get better”. She was referring to knowledge. With the advancement of technology you are able to teach yourself anything you could possibly think of! If you choose not to grow your mind, you deserve to be broke!
  3. Diversify Your Incoming Money – There are unlimited ways to make a dollar today… And there are still people out there with money and they are spending it. What are they buying? How can you sell it to them? Be creative! What talents or resources do you posses that you can use to make money? Think outside the nine-to-five mentality and start using your God given natural talents. Remember; don’t look for a $100,000 fix to your situation. Ten $10,000 ideas pay just the same.

My wife and I made it through being BROKE and now we still try to push ourselves to make more and more money and we have a great time doing it. Every Saturday we go “treasure hunting”. Not for a treasure chest full of gold and jewels, but instead we look for items we can buy and resell (books, furniture, etc…). It is not uncommon for us to spend $10 on an item and sell it for $100 (buy at auctions and sell on Craigslist). Think about it… Spend $500 on a Saturday and sell your innovatory for $5,000 within two weeks (considering you buy the right items). Even if you only sell half of it, you are up $2,000. There are many other ways to make money; I thought I would just give you an example.

You have the choice to get creative and make money in this type of economy or you can keep complaining about it and hope it will get better. I know which option I would choose… The one that pays better!

If you are complaining to others about being broke… SHUT UP and do something about it! Sorry this message is so harsh, but seriously, something needs to change!

Note: I think a lot of people who know me personally will be shocked to hear that I have been through this type of situation… The reason they will be dumbfounded, is because they didn’t know. Why didn’t they know? I didn’t complain about it, I did something about it and recovered quickly.

  6. Hi Marge – To get started go to http://auctionzip.com and find local auctions in your area. Buy furniture there for cheap and then sell it on Craigslist. Hope this helps!
