Does Anyone Remember Twitter?

Adam DesAutels on 10 13, 2009

This message is to the early adopters of Twitter. Do you remember how Twitter was at the beginning? It was about genuine communication. It was REAL. You could have conversations with people you really wanted to meet and talk to. People left their doors open and let others in. People were transparent.
Unfortunately, when Twitter went main stream, it became main stream. All of a sudden, almost overnight, people started pouring into this social media playground. Big businesses, celebrities, and anyone that had something to peddle is now doing it via Twitter. Twitter was once filled with real conversations and those conversations are now being drowned out by blatant self promoters. Every other Direct Message is SPAM:
“I just added you to my Mafia family. You should accept my invitation! Click here:”
“Check out my website here:”
“Thanks for following! Check out my site:”
“Thank you for following me on Twitter. Accept my gift:”
And my personal favorite:
“Get more Twitter followers here:”
I don’t really think “more useless followers” is the answer. So, where does that leave us? The early adopters and people that want to have real conversations. My opinion would be… Start un-following. It’s time to start weeding out the heard. Get rid of the people you are following that only post about themselves and their products.
… Just sayin’ and that is exactly what I intend to do today.
